I was at a point where I knew I had a drug problem and wanted to give up that I first heard of Narcotics Anonymous. Drugs were destroying my life and it was time that I faced that fact.
At the first meeting I really didn't know what to expect, I sat through three quarters of the meeting without registering a single sentence except one, that was a statement in the opening reading that 'for people like ourselves one is too many and a thousand never enough'. I walked out of the meeting thinking I was as clueless as when I walked in, but I wasn't as I had gathered thoughts around that single sentence, a statement I could relate to regarding my addiction, something that had a personal meaning for me. This became more and more clear as I continued to attend meetings. Once the meeting was over some of those that had been at the meeting said 'hello' and introduced themselves and reminded me of the important message, that it works, all you have to do is keep coming back, some also gave me their phone number.
At every meeting since then I see their happy faces, people who can smile today because they have followed the NA program. Giving up using drugs is no walk in the park but it's not as hard as we might at first think it is, and the NA program and the people within it make the whole process a lot easier. From the program I have learned many things and one of the most important is that I am not alone; alone I wouldn't be where I am today, clean and sober. The one thing that happened to me in the first meeting I have learned is a constant for everyone in the program, all you need to do is keep coming back and in every meeting you will hear something special, something true which will carry you on in advancing your recovery and making it successful.
